Hip to gable loft conversions

A hip to gable loft conversion is where the ridge line of a hipped roof is extended to make a gable-end roof. These type of loft conversions significantly increases the size and usable volume of the loft itself. A rear dormer conversion can also be added to the end result to maximise the finished room size.

Where a property has a hipped or sloping roof on its side, we can remove this section of the roof and build a gable end. The gable end is then either built up in stud work with tiles to blend with the existing roof colour, or built up in brick work to match the style of the existing structure with a view to ensuring the new hip to gable conversion blends seamlessly with the rest of the building.

Hip to gable loft conversions are increasingly becoming the extension type of choice for owners of chalets and bungalows who want to add extra living space to their property instead of moving home. It lends itself particularly well to homes with hipped roofs, including many semi-detached and detached houses – however, please note that it is rarely suitable for mid-terrace properties, and it can appear a little unbalanced on a semi-detached house if your neighbour hasn’t yet invested in this kind of conversion for themselves.

Changes to the roof profile and the external structure are required with a hip to gable loft conversion, and therefore you may need to obtain planning permission from the local authorities before we can proceed with the design and build. You can learn more about planning permission requirements by heading over to the government’s Planning Portal website, or you can contact one of our hip to gable loft conversion specialists to discuss your ideas and concerns in more detail.
