Loft conversion
How Long Does a Loft Conversion Take?
The amount of time it takes to build your beautiful new loft conversion will ultimately depend on the type of works you have chosen. Truss, Velux and dormer loft conversions are usually more straightforward, whereas hip to gable and Mansard conversions may take a little longer to bring to life as we will be required to alter the structure of the property as part of the installation.
To answer your question in more detail, we’ve used a dormer conversion as a practical example.
The standard time span for a dormer conversion is 6-8 weeks. Because we directly employ all our tradesmen and do not rely on subcontractors, we are always confident in our timings. Unless we’re faced with exceptional weather conditions, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to stick to the quoted timescale.
Timetable of Events
To give you an idea of what to expect from the loft conversion process, we have put together a timeline of events below.
1. Your initial consultation
Before we embark on any loft conversion, we will carry out a full study of the space and put together ideas and designs to meet your brief. At this stage, we will also consider whether or not we/you will need to apply for planning permission for the project; if so, we’ll help you get the necessary paperwork in place so we can then start the build.
2. Starting the works
The scaffolding goes up, the materials are delivered, and we create an opening in the roof so our tradesmen can access the space.
3. Commencing construction
We’ll start by carrying out the floor joisting, which will need to be approved by a building inspector from the local authority. From there, we’ll construct the dormer; install suitable insulation; add in lead work, fascias and guttering; create the studwork walls; develop an access point; and fit in your dormer windows or Velux windows.
4. The finishing touches
Now that the core structure has been created, it’s time to start adding the features that are going to turn your loft void into a beautiful, usable space. We’ll install cabling, complete any plumbing that’s required, and plaster over the entire room. When we’re happy that all this work has been completed to an exceptional standard, we will add in carpentry works (skirting boards, doors and handrails, for example) and add in any UPVC ware or sanitary fittings that are needed.
5. Final inspections and sign-off
At the end of every project, we will clear down before inviting the building inspector to carry out his final visit. Once he or she is happy that all works comply with building and fire regulations, the building inspector will issue a completion certificate.
Once your brand-new loft space has been fully checked and approved, it’s yours to enjoy!
